The Interim Measures for the Administration of Internet Advertising entered into force on 1 Sept. 2016.

There are 29 articles in total, which aim to regulate the use of the Internet for advertising activities. The key points are as follows:

  1. It is prohibited to use the Internet to publish advertisements for goods or services that are not allowed to produce or sell by laws and administrative regulations.
  2. It is prohibited to use the Internet to publish advertisements for prescription drugs and tobacco. Other pharmaceutical advertisements shall be subject to examination and approval before being published online.
  3. Internet advertisements shall be marked with an obvious sign of “Ads”.
  4. It is prohibited to use technical means to block, filter, cover, and/or fast forward others’ legitimate advertising.
  5. It is prohibited to use technical means to disrupt the normal advertising data transmission, tamper with or block others’ legitimate advertising, and load advertising without authorization.
