The Provisions on the Protection of Geographically Indicated Products were promulgated on 7 June 2005 and entered into force on 15 July 2005.

There are 28 articles in total, which aim to protect geographically indicated products.

The key points are as follows:

  1. Geographically indicated products refer to the products produced in a specific region, whose quality, reputation or other features essentially depend on the natural and cultural factors of the place of origin, and are approved to be named after geographical names.

  2. The geographically indicated products protection application agencies designated by the local government or other associations and enterprises recognized by the local government may, as applicants, apply to the regulatory authority for the protection given to geographically indicated products.

  3. If the regulatory authority considers the application qualified, it will issue an announcement approving the product to be protected as a geographically indicated product.

  4. Producers within the scope of origin of geographically indicated products may use the special mark for geographically indicated products.
