China Revises Law on Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products

On 2 Sept. 2022, the Standing Committee of the 13th National People’s Congress adopted the newly revised Law on Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products (农产品质量安全法), which will come into effect on 1 Jan. 2023.

The Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products Law was promulgated in 2006 and slightly amended in 2018. This time, it was revised thoroughly, with the following key points added:

  • Farmers shall assume responsibility for the quality and safety of agricultural products, and operators in the process of procurement, storage and transportation shall conduct inspections of their products.
  • Operators who sell agricultural products on e-commerce platforms shall assume responsibility for the quality and safety of their products.
  • China will adopt traceability management of the quality and safety of agricultural products.
